The Art of Racing in the Rain is about Enzo, a dog who is almost human and extremely observant about what happens in the life of his friend and owner, Denny Swift, who has a passion for race car driving. Enzo loves watching racing on TV with Denny and watching Denny drive at the race track. But his most thrilling adventure is his being strapped in and riding with Denny around the track.
Things change in the family when Denny’s wife, Eve, gets sick and their daughter, Zoe, goes to live with her maternal grandparents. Through a series of ordeals which befall the family, Enzo struggles to take care of all of them.
When Denny starts to feel beaten down by what’s happening in his life, and it seems as if he might choose what Enzo considers the wrong way for him to respond to some situations, Enzo manages, without speaking, to remind him of the right way to act. These lessons result in some very funny scenes. I enjoyed the humor and the insights in this book and the love and loyalty of this family.
If there was anything that could improve the book, it would be the author’s clarifiying some of the racing terms that were not familiar to me.
I would recommend the book to anyone who enjoys a well-written, engaging story. The book is narrated by a dog, and this adds to its appeal because it shows such a different perspective.
