BarbUK: Musings from the Old Country

Filed under: 1 — code318 @ 6:58 pm

I intend to muse on random happenings in the UK, be it from my village or elsewhere.  I hope to communicate about life here, what impacts us, and how some global happenings affect us.  I appreciate your comments.

  1. The current topic uppermost here is the phone hacking scandal – which has highlighted some very unsavoury goings-on between newspapers and the police. We’ve had one newspaper close, a couple of men arrested and two separate enquiries going on – one about hacking, and one about the police being paid for information.
    The other curiosity is why the editor at the time of the the murdered girl’s phone hacking hasn’t either resigned or been sacked. Opinion amongst the folks around here seems to be divided over whether she will be a fall guy for the owners of the paper at some future point, or whether she has some “dirt” on them.
    Everyone I’ve talked to is appalled at the levels to which the gutter press have sunk .
    Have you heard any rumblings of this?

    • Dear Barb,

      This is all I have heard:

      I heard that a tabloid owned by Rupert Murdoch had closed. The tabloid is in big trouble for engaging in some illegal practices. This tabloid was one of the best-selling papers in the world.

  2. Oh yes, Pat, lots of talk about this over here. I think a lot of people here are interested and talking about it as he owns several newspapers and TV conglomerates here also. (Fox conglomerate, New York Post . . . . )

    • There seem to be new allegations daily. To use a newspaper term “this one could run and run” !

      In better news, my kitchen remodel starts in two weeks. Its not the talk of the town.. yet! :)

      • That’s exciting about your new kitchen. Please keep us posted as it goes in. It can be the talk of the blog. :O)

      • What are your plans for the kitchen remodel? Will it look modern and chic like your bathroom?

      • It will look quite modern and hopefully easy to keep clean.
        The units will be white, the worktops are jet black with quartz sparkles.
        Wall tiles are going to be white and a few black ones randomly placed to break it up.
        The floor will be ceramic tile, not granite! Having the bathroom done has taught me that granite looks beautiful, but even though sealed, when you wash it you need to polish the tile before the dampness goes off, or it streaks. Too much work for the large kitchen we have.
        Sink, taps, oven, extractor, and hob are all stainless steel.

  3. translation:

    units=cupboards
    worktops=counter tops
    extractor=??????????
    hob=????????????

    I, too, have quartz counter tops because the salesperson said they were easier to clean. Black with quartz sparkles! You are modern.

    • hob… four or six gas rings sitting atop a stainless steel base. What do you call it?

      Extractor .. the device which sits above the hob , which when switched on extracts the cooking smells and through a sealed hose vents to the outdoors.

  4. Here, hob = stove top
    extractor = exhaust fan

    How is the remodeling going?

    • Its coming along very well, Marie.
      Building work is all finished, just two days of tiling to do now. Then one day for that to set before we can walk on it and we’ll be able to paint the ceiling and walls :)

  5. BarbUK,

    I hope you are not amongst those getting in trouble.

    • Far too busy creating a kitchen, to be out destroying the city, JoAnn.

      I’m only glad we left that type of area behind when we moved. I’m as appalled as most decent British people are by the mindless vandalism and looting. And terribly sad for those who lost their lives, and for their families too . x
